Life is a Fairy Tale

Life is a Fairy Tale is a series of seven sculptures that explores the fragile boundary between stable housing and the life events that can lead to homelessness. Many of the fairy tales we grew up with—such as Hansel and Gretel and The Three Little Pigs—center around a single event that forces the characters into homelessness, highlighting the unpredictability and vulnerability of losing one's home.

The inspiration for this series first emerged years ago while I was renting my home. Each time a landlord decided to sell the property, I was faced with the uncertainty of finding new housing under stressful timelines. It became clear to me that housing insecurity transcends socio-economic boundaries; what seems like a simple shift in circumstance can quickly spiral into displacement.

More recently, after experiencing job loss, I found myself with the time to dedicate to my art, and this idea resurfaced. Fairy tales, in their original form, are dark and cautionary, often revolving around the loss of home due to abandonment, disaster, financial hardship, domestic upheaval, or aging. I have chosen seven stories that best illustrate these varied pathways into housing insecurity.

While each sculpture appears whimsical initially, they are crafted in ceramic, and finished with natural oxide washes. This reflects the raw and often harsh realities of these narratives. Through this work, I aim to spark reflection on the precarious nature of housing and the unseen struggles many face.

Town Musicians of Bremen
Town Musicians of Bremen Detail
Town Musicians of Bremen work in progress

"The Town Musicians of Bremen" is a German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm about four aging animals—a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster—no longer useful and discarded by their owners and decide to run away to Bremen to become musicians. Along their journey, they encounter a band of robbers in a cottage. Using their combined voices to create a terrifying cacophony, they scare the robbers away and take over the house. When the robbers try to return, the animals outwit them again, ultimately deciding to stay in the cottage and live happily ever after instead of continuing to Bremen. The tale highlights themes of resilience, teamwork, and finding new purpose in life.

Vasilisa & Baba Yaga (domestic upheaval- full story here)

"Vasilisa and Baba Yaga" is a Russian fairy tale about a young girl named Vasilisa, who is sent into the dark forest by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters to fetch light from the fearsome witch, Baba Yaga. With the help of a magical doll given to her by her late mother, Vasilisa bravely navigates the eerie woods and reaches Baba Yaga's hut, which stands on chicken legs. Baba Yaga assigns her difficult tasks, but with the doll’s aid, Vasilisa completes them. Eventually, Baba Yaga sends her home with a glowing skull lantern, which burns her wicked stepfamily to ashes. Vasilisa later finds fortune and happiness, proving that kindness, courage, and wisdom triumph over cruelty.

Goldilocks & the Three Bears (home invasion. Full story here.)

"Goldilocks and the Three Bears" is a classic fairy tale about a girl named Goldilocks who stumbles upon a cottage in the woods and feels what she finds is hers. Inside, she finds three bowls of porridge, three chairs, and three beds—each belonging to a family of bears: Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear. She samples each, choosing the one that suits her best, but in doing so, she eats Baby Bear’s porridge, breaks his chair, and falls asleep in his bed. When the bears return home and discover her, Goldilocks wakes up in fright and flees, learning a lesson about respecting others' space and belongings.

Terra
Fauna

Terra Fauna is a sculpture series that balances the whimsical with the real, capturing how I see animals—not just in form, but in spirit. Each piece is sculpted from terra cotta clay, and modeled with attention to the musculature and structure of the animal, ensuring a sense of movement and life. Every sculpture is one of a kind, reflecting both the natural essence of the animal and the way they exist in my heart, blending realism with a touch of fantasy. Through this series, I aim to celebrate the beauty, character, and untamed energy of the wild, inviting viewers to see animals not just as creatures, but as personalities with stories of their own. Each piece is available for sale, and commisions are accepted.
